Wayamba United led by Mahela Jayawardene opened its SLPL campaign with a thumping 9-wicket win over Uthura Rudras led by Jehan Mubarak on Sunday. Wayamba seem to be the most powerful side in the SLP especially in the batting department. This was evident as they chased down a huge target of 180 without any fuss thanks to a powerful opening stand of 176 from its two overseas openers – Tamim Iqbal and Kamran Akmal.
Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Uthura Rudras posted a good total of 179 for 7. Their innings was given a nice shape by opener Imran Farhat, who top scored with 51 from just 22 balls (with 4 fours and 5 sixes). Chamara Kapugedera cracked 38 (from 24 balls with 4 fours and a six) while Farveez Maharoof chipped in with 28 (from 16 balls with 3 sixes).
Rudras then were flayed apart in their bowling because of attacking half centuries from Tamim Iqbal (93* from 61 balls with 7 fours and 6 sixes) and Kamran Akmal (79 from 55 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes). Wayamba eased to the target with four balls to spare and nine wickets in hand. Tamim Iqbal was named as the Player of the Match.
