Australia suffered its heaviest defeat in T20Is at Dubai today after Pakistan had dismissed them for a sorry total of 89. Pakistan needing just 90 runs to win from 20 overs cruised to a 7-wicket win with as many as 31 balls to spare.
Pakistan’s decision to field first after winning the toss proved to be right as Australia struggled to put up anything on the board. Umar Gul provided the first breakthrough in the 3rd over when Shane Watson (8) played across the line for an lbw. Sohail Tanvir got no.3 Michael Hussey driving him early to reduce Australia to 13 for 2. After a slight recovery, Australia lost the big wicket of David Warner (22 from 25 balls) who was caught and bowled by Mohammad Hafeez off a soft leading edge with the score at 46 for 3 in 8.3 overs.
The Aussies slipped further to 52 for 5 and with the overs running out quickly, the rest of the batting crumbled under pressure. The innings ended in 19.3 overs with the most successful bowler being Sohail Tanvir with 3 for 13. Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal and debutant left-arm spinner chipped in with two wickets each.
The run chase for Pakistan was wrapped up in 14.5 overs for the loss of three wickets. Comeback Wicket Keeper Kamran Akmal gained some confidence with an unbeaten 31 from 24 balls with 3 fours and a six.
