Team India bounced back in style against England with a comprehensive 127-run in the Second ODI at Kochi this evening. Skipper MS Dhoni led from the front and Ravindra Jadeja put in a career best all-round show to help the hosts level the 5-match series 1-1.

Batting first after winning the toss, India were in early trouble as the new ball duo of Jade Dernbach and Steven Finn went through the gates of Gambhir and Rahane respectively to leave the hosts at 18 for 2 inside five overs. Yuvraj Singh repaired the damage with a counter attack but his innings was cut short to a 37-ball 32 with Tredwell having him lbw after missing a sweep shot. Virat Kohli appeared to be regaining his form but got caught in the deep for a 54-ball 37. India slipped to 119 for 4 in 26.2 overs and were in trouble of getting bowled out for a modest total.

Fortunately for India, the pair of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni put on a terrific partnership of 55 to revive the team’s position. Raina scored a crucial 55 from 78 balls (with 2 fours and 2 sixes). Skipper MS Dhoni gave a perfect finish with Ravindra Jadeja as India plundered more than 100 runs in the last 10 overs. Dhoni blasted 72 from 66 balls (with 7 fours and 2 sixes) by playing quite a lot of helicopter wristy shots. Jadeja played his best knock at this level with an unbeaten 61 (from 37 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes). For England, spinners Samit Patel with 10-0-43-0 and James Tredwell with 10-0-48-1 bowled on a tight leash though with little rewards.

In the run chase, Ian Bell fell early in the 2nd over nicking his drive to a full length away swinger from Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the keeper. A solid partnership followed after this between Skipper Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen. Both the batsmen were dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Cook (17) given lbw to a good length delivery that pitched marginally outside leg and the dangerous Pietersen (42 from 44 balls with 7 fours) bowled through the gate trying a forcing backfoot drive. Two balls after Pietersen’s exit, Kumar got Eoin Morgan nicking him behind to the diving Dhoni to leave England in tatters at 73 for 4 in the 15th over.

It was completely India’s match after Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s triple blow. The spinners Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin then had a cakewalk in not only containing but also in getting a few wickets with little effort on a pitch that was taking square turn. England as a result collapsed to 158 all out in just 36 overs. Samit Patel was left stranded on an unbeaten 30 (from 29 balls) which brought down the defeat to 127 runs.

For India, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was outstanding, bowling his 10 overs on the trot and taking three wickets for 29 runs. Shami Ahmed was effective with his first spell of 4-1-24-1. Man of the Match Ravindra Jadeja with 7-1-12-2 and R Ashwin with 7-0-39-3 did the clean up job for the hosts.

Toss and Teams: India have won the toss and elected to bat first in the Second ODI at the Nehru Stadium in Kochi. The pitch at Kochi will be good for batting although it is likely to slow down considerably as the match progresses. The conditions are hot and humid and the players will have to perform infront of a huge crowd of around 70,000.

Both the sides have one change each, India have brought in Shami Ahmed for Ashok Dinda. England have replaced the injured Tim Bresnan with Chris Woakes.
