Surrey defeated Essex by 17 runs in a low-scoring match of the South Group Friends Life t20 2012 played at The Oval.
Batting first after winning the toss, Surrey were restricted to 128 for 8. The top scorer of Surrey was Gary Wilson, who made a run-a-ball 33. For Essex, medium pacer Graham Napier claimed 3 for 16 in 4 overs. Left arm spinner Tim Phillips, who opened the bowling came up with figures of 2/19 in 4 overs.
Essex despite chasing just 129 could come up with only 111/9. And this was even after getting a bright start of 44 in 5.5 overs from openers Ravi Bopara (28 from 29 balls) and Mark Pettini (20). Off spinner Gareth Batty bowled superbly for Surrey taking 3 for 20 in 4 overs while pacer Jade Dernbach took 2 for 17 in 3 overs. Batty was given the Player of the Match award.
