Will India qualify for the Commonwealth Bank Series 2012? Here is how...

A brilliant chase of 321 well inside 40 overs saw India defeat Sri Lanka yesterday at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart to get a bonus point which keeps them alive in the CB Series. India has played all its league matches and has finished with 15 points. They have leveled with Sri Lanka as far as points are concerned. However, Sri Lanka still have one more match to go against Australia on March 2nd. If Sri Lanka defeat Australia in that 12th and last league match of the Series, then they will meet the hosts again in the best of three finals. If they lose, then it shall be India who will go through into the finals to meet Australia!

India playing 8 matches has won only 3, lost 4 and tied one. Sri Lanka have played 7 matches and have won 3, lost 3 and tied one game.

If Sri Lanka go onto lose their last match against Australia then they will finish with the same points as India. The team to go into the Finals between India and Sri Lanka (should they finish with same points) will be decided based on this preferences :

1. The team with the most number of wins - Both India and Sri Lanka will be equal with three wins each.

2. If the above factor is ruled out, then the team that has defeated the other more will gain entry into the final. Considering this scenario, India and Sri Lanka have played against each other four times. India has defeated Sri Lanka twice, lost once and tied one game. Sri Lanka on the other hand has defeated India only once which will not be good enough!

So based on the second factor, India will enter into the Final if Sri Lanka goes onto lose its last league match against Australia at Melbourne on the 2nd of March.

Is there any chance Aussies would lose intentionally against Sri Lanka to avoid India in the Finals??
