England overcame a big scare against the West Indies to win the opening Test at Lord’s by 5 wickets. Although the margin sounds like a comfortable victory, it was a hard-earned on considering that England at one stage were having their backs on the wall at 57 for 4 chasing a target of 191.

The hosts starting Day 5 at 10/2 were in early trouble losing two more wickets to excite the West Indies. However, the pair of Alastair Cook and Ian Bell steadied the ship by carrying the hosts to 131/4 by lunch.

Alastair Cook scored 79After Tea, England were cruising towards victory before Alastair Cook got dismissed with just another two runs to win. Cook scored 79 from 127 balls with 10 fours while Ian Bell remained not out on 63 (from 103 balls with 5 fours). Kemar Roach’s 3/60 went in vain for West Indies.

The Player of the Match went to Stuart Broad who destroyed West Indies in the first innings taking 7 wickets and then in the second innings taking four.
