Team India captain Rohit Sharma hailed Suryakumar Yadav for his brilliant century in a losing cause against England in the third and final T20I of the series in Nottingham on Sunday (July 10). Chasing a massive 216, Suryakumar played a lone hand for India, scoring a blazing 117 off 55 balls. He struck 14 fours and six sixes to give India faint hopes of a victory. India, however, fell short, ending on 198 for 9.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Rohit, who also leads Suryakumar in the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI), said, “I thought it was a fantastic chase although we fell short. We are proud of the fight. Surya was magnificent to watch. I have been watching him for a while now. Loves this format, has wide range of shots. He has grown from strength to strength since we got him into the squad.”

Suryakumar came into bat after India lost Rishabh Pant (1) and Virat Kohli (11) cheaply. Soon, the visitors also lost Rohit (11) and crumbled to 31 for 3. Suryakumar and Shreyas Iyer added 119 for the fourth wicket, but the latter only contributed 28 off 23 balls before falling to the short ball again.

Analyzing India’s defeat, Rohit admitted that England put them under pressure with their batting. He said, “Decent partnership put us on the back foot. You back yourself to get this score. We were clear in trying out guys if they can bowl 4 overs.”

On the way forward for the team, he conceded that India need to work on things as a group. He concluded, “So far things are pretty good. We don't want to sit on laurels. We want to get better every game. Today was a great learning for us to come out and bowl. And to bat as well. Games like this teach you.”

Dawid Malan top-scored for England with 77 off 39 balls while Liam Livingstone was unbeaten on 42 off 29. However, Reece Topley walked away with the player of the match trophy for his figures of 3 for 22 in a high-scoring clash. He dismissed Pant, Rohit and Shreyas.
