Match Summary of England Vs West Indies, Day 1, First Investec Test at Lord's May 17, 2012 by BV Swagath

England had a great opening day’s play in the First Investec Test at Lord’s after West Indies slipped to 243/9. Stuart Broad claimed 6 for 72 in 24.4 overs to put England in control after Andrew Strauss had won the toss and asked West Indies to bat first. This is Stuart Broad’s maiden maiden five-wicket haul at Lord’s in Tests.

It was a poor start from West Indies who found themselves at 32 for 2 with James Anderson picking up the early wickets. Opener Adrian Barath provided a fightback for Windies but fell immediately after lunch for 42 (from 101 balls with 9 fours) playing a loose drive off Stuart Broad.

Stuart Broad took 6 for 72By Tea, West Indies looked alright at 146 for 4 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul settling in nicely with Marlon Samuels. However, Stuart Broad spoilt things completely for West Indies by taking as many as five wickets in the evening session as the visitors from 181 for 4 collapsed to 243 for 9 by the close of play.

The only man who stood tall amongst the ruins was veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who remained unbeaten on a patient 87 from 175 balls with a dozen fours.

There were two debutants in this First Investec Test at Lord’s. For England, middle order batsman Jonny Bairstow got to make his Test Debut. And for the West Indies, 24-year-old Shannon Gabriel, a fast bowler from Trinidad & Tobago was making his first international appearance.
