1st ODI: India vs England at Hyderabad (Deccan)
Oct 14, 2011 (14:30 local , 09:00 GMT, 2 PM PKT)
England may win the TOSS.
India (52:48) England, India may win the match.
India landed in England on July 13. Over the last four months they have lost eight players to injuries, many others have lost form, and an equal number didn’t even bring it to begin with. Their No. 1 ranking is gone, the Twenty-20 international was lost, and they have slipped to 5th spot on the ranking tables.
This is a new series and most importantly it is in India.Vengeance will definitely be on every Indian fans mind. One important player who has returned is Gautam Gambhir. Virat Kohli was the man RCB counted on and he will surely want to bring that form in this series. Suresh Raina and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni have played non-stop cricket for long but both have shown form right through these few months. Openers will be same as they were for the England series but I still believe one of the openers should be authoritative.
The squad is missing Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma due to injuries sustained on the recent tour of England. Fast bowler Ashish Nehra has declared himself fit after breaking his hand during the World Cup.
Sreenath Aravind had a strong 2010-11 domestic season. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for Karnataka with 26 scalps and also the second-highest wicket-taker for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy with 10 wickets. He followed that up with an impressive performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2011 to push his claims for national recognition. Rahul Sharma also caught notice in the IPL, where he picked up 16 wickets in 14 games for the under-performing Pune Warriors, at the eye-popping economy-rate of 5.46.
Offspinner Harbhajan Singh has been left out of India’s squad for the first two ODIs against England on October 14 and 17. Karnataka medium-pacer Aravind and Punjab legspinner Rahul Sharma have received their maiden international call-ups. Bowling will comprise of Jadeja, Ashwin, Praveen,Vinay kumar and Varun Aron. Jadeja will provide the all-round option; the team did find out that he had a lot to offer in the England tour. India should win the series as everyone knows India plays a lot better at home.
They completely outplayed India in their yard but beating them at home is one thing which every team wants to do. The team is on a high with their only defeat coming in West Indies. English condition are very different from that in India and they will remember that the last time they came here, the series result was 5-0.
A number of the younger players that were selected against West Indies will be heading to India. Scott Borthwick impressed against West Indies, and has nudged in ahead of Danny Briggs, the Hampshire left-arm spinner, who didn’t get a game in those fixtures. It’s also an important tour for Samit Patel who needs to put in consistent all-round displays and prove his fitness levels in testing conditions.
The pace attack will once again be without Stuart Broad or James Anderson, which will give another opportunity to the improving Steven Finn after he regularly touched 90mph towards the end of the season. Bowling in the subcontinent will be another stage in his development but he’ll be able to tap into the knowledge of his debut Test series against Bangladesh. The Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes has also been called into the squad, along with the Durham legspinner Borthwick, who impressed with a spell of 1-15 in his four overs against West Indies. Anderson, who has had a heavy workload this summer, will be allowed a break from international cricket until the squad travels to the UAE in January for their Test and ODI series against Pakistan, while Durham’s Ben Stokes has not been selected so that he can undergo a rehabilitation programme on a finger injury.
This will be a tough a series ahead for the English side.
