Former India captain Ajit Wadekar passed away at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital on Wednesday. He was 77. Wadekar will always be remembered as the captain who led India to historic Test series wins in West Indies and England in 1971. Wadekar is survived by wife Rekha and a son as well as a daughter.

Wadekar played 31 Tests, hitting one hundred and 14 fifties before retiring in 1974 at 33. He retired as coach in 1992 and formed a formidable partnership at home with Mohammad Azharuddin.

"Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Ajit Wadekar Sir. He was someone who was instrumental in bringing out the best in us during the 90s. We'll always be grateful for his advice and guidance. Praying for strength for his family during this difficult time," Sachin Tendulkar wrote on his twitter page.

Azharuddin wrote, "Such an iconic person..deeply saddened by his demise!! Sir was a father figure for me.. May his soul rest in peace! My Heartfelt Condolences to the family.
