The 12th Indian Premier League (IPL) is just days away and former India opener and ex-KKR skipper has stirred controversy by stating that Virat Kohli is lucky that the Royal Challengers Bangalore have stuck with him despite him not being able to deliver the desired results as skipper.

Speaking on a Star Sports show, Gambhir said that Kohli should not be compared with other successful captains like Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"I don’t see him as a shoot captain or a tactful captain. And he hasn’t won the IPL. So ultimately a captain is only as good as his record till the time you don’t win the IPL," Gambhir said.

Explaining his stance, Gambhir added, "He has been part of RCB and captaining RCB for the last seven to eight years and he has been very lucky and should rather thank the franchise that they stuck to him because not many captains have got such a long run where they haven’t won a tournament."

IPL 12 kicks off on March 23 with the clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
