Jonathan Trott hit 92 on Wednesday to help England to 327-8 in its World Cup group match against Ireland and equal the record for the quickest ever 1,000 one-day international runs.
Trott and Ian Bell added 167 for the third wicket at Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium, with Trott matching a record set by Kevin Pietersen and West Indies great Viv Richards by reaching the milestone in 21 innings.
Bell struck 81 as England justified captain Andrew Strauss' decision to bat after winning the toss.
Pietersen chipped in with 59 as Ireland were set a target that looked to be beyond the ICC Associate nation, even on the wicket where England and India each hit 338 in last weekend's memorable Group B tie.
Trott compiled his innings in the unflashy fashion that has become his trademark, constantly collecting ones and twos to rotate the strike with Bell. He hit just nine fours before he was bowled by Paul Mooney in a flurry of late wickets that slowed England's momentum.
Bell was caught by Paul Stirling at midwicket off a full toss by Mooney, Trott fell next and Matt Prior went for just 6, bowled by Trent Johnston. Paul Collingwood then holed out to Kevin O'Brien off the bowling of Moody as six wickets fell in the last 7.1 overs.
After early struggles, Johnston bowled Michael Yardy for 3 for figures of 2-58 — becoming the first Ireland player to take 50 one-day wickets — and Mooney had Tim Bresnan caught off the last ball of the 50 overs to finish with one-day best figures of 4-63.
Openers Strauss and Pietersen put on 91 but both fell cheaply to spin to make it 111-2. Strauss went first for 34, trying to flick George Dockrell down the leg side and pushing the ball onto his stumps, while Pietersen tried to reverse sweep Stirling but looped it off his glove to wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien.
The openers had progressed mostly untroubled to 72-0 from the first 10 overs, Pietersen striking a 77-meter six back over Johnston's head to reach 42 from 34 balls by the end of the opening powerplay.
Strauss hit just two fours in the same period, but did strike Boyd Rankin for a six that cleared the boundary at deep backward square just beyond the grasp of the diving Dockrell.
Pietersen struck Dockrell for four to reach his 22nd one-day 50 from 40 balls but the spinner got rid of Strauss for 34 in his next over.
