England is no doubt the number one test team in the world and the T20 International champions, but their ODI credentials are not something to boast of. They are 5th in the ICC ODI rankings, and lost in the world cup to minnows like Bangladesh and Ireland. Even after their monumental Ashes victory down under, they lost the ODI series 6-1. In the last summer, they were taken to the last ODI against Pakistan at their home soil, after they had completely dominated them in the Test series. This much is evident that despite their overall dominance in test cricket there still remains much that is wanted in their ODI performances.

Having said that, England team have shown the signs that they are utilizing the momentum, they are gaining from their ascendancy in test cricket to fuel success in the shorter formats as well. They recently won their first ever International event in cricket in the form of T20 World Cup, and even in the World Cup in the subcontinent, despite being inconsistent there were flashes of brilliance, in their draw against the eventual champions and victory against the South Africans.

The World Cup showed that the constant effort that has brought them to the top in test cricket is also present in the team in shorter formats, as they didn’t let themselves down after defeats to lesser oppositions, and came back to hurt the bigger teams. The signs were also evident in the recent ODI series against the World Cup finalists Srilanka, when they came back from 2-1 down to take the series 3-2. The mental toughness that has brought them success in the test arena is there in their ODI team as well, all they need is to give the same importance to success in ODIs as they have given it to success in tests and they can become world beaters in the ODI format as well.
