It seems unlikely that the South Africa captain Graeme Smith will play in the first Test against India that starts on December 16 in Centurion. Smith aggravated his finger injury that he had sustained in the first ODI against Pakistan in UAE.

The finger is said to be fractured though it was reported that no bone was displaced. Smith had sustained the fracture after being hit by the Pakistan pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar. Smith then missed the second and the third ODI of the series.

According to the manager Mohammad Moosajee, the injury only worsened due to the wear and tear.

It became relatively severe in the second Test match against Pakistan, which is currently underway. This forced Smith to stay away from batting in the second innings.

Moosajee also said that it will be difficult to predict whether Smith will be fit to play in the Tests against India that begin from December 16. Smith has injured his fingers earlier as well, with the most recent injury being in the IPL this year.
