List of India's biggest Test defeats:India's honeymoon with the 'Test No. 1 rank' got over with the loss here against England in the third Test. But more than the defeat

India's honeymoon with the 'Test No. 1 rank' got over with the loss here against England in the third Test. But more than the defeat, it was the way Team India lost - conceding their third worst loss in Test cricket by an innings and 242 runs inside four days.

MS Dhoni and Praveen Kumar's heroics late in the day weren't enough to minimise the margin and keep it out of the top-five worst losses for India. In fact, in that list, India's two biggest defeats have now come against England - who go on top of the Test rankings for the first time since 1979.

List of India's biggest Test defeats:

- Inns and 336 runs vs West Indies at Kolkata in 1958-59

- Inns and 285 runs vs England at Lord's in 1974

- Inns and 242 runs vs England at Birmingham in 2011

- Inns and 239 runs vs Sri Lanka at Colombo SSC in 2008

- Inns and 226 runs vs Australia at Brisbane in 1947-48

By losing the Edgbaston Test, India go 0-3 down; and once the ranking points are revised at the end of the four-Test series, England will knock India off the top Test spot.

This is also Dhoni's first Test series loss since being handed over India's Test captaincy in 2008. The Indian skipper had either won or drawn 12 Test series as captain before losing the current one against England.

The last match of this series starts at The Oval on August 18.
