With the latest edition of the Champions League T20 all set to get underway in a few days’ time, we build up to the tournament by looking at the previous editions of the tournament. In our second part, we look at the 2010 edition held back in South Africa.

Teams

A total of 10 teams took part in the 2010 edition. The sides were divided into two groups of five teams each. Group A had Chennai Super Kings, Warriors, Victoria, Wayamba and Central Districts while Group B featured South Australia, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Lions, Mumbai Indians and Guyana. Twenty matches were played in the group stage as each team played the other in the group once. Following the group stage, the top two sides from each group qualified for the semi-final stage.

Chennai Super Kings and Warriors were the two superior teams in the first group. Both played four games and won three of them while losing one. Victoria also won three of their four matches, but had a poor run rate in comparison to CSK and Warriors and thus finished third. Wayamba were fourth in the points table with one win and three losses, giving them only two points. Central Districts finished last in their group losing all their four matches.

South Australia were the dominant side in Group B. They won all four of their matches in the group stage. Royal Challengers Bangalore were second with two wins and two losses. Lions and Mumbai Indians also finished with four points with two wins and two losses. However, their net run rate was inferior to South Australia and RCB, and hence they did not qualify further. Guyana finished last in the group losing all their four matches.

Semi-finals

Chennai Super Kings took on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first semi-final at Durban. Chennai batted first and smashed 174 for 4 courtesy Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 94 from 48 balls, with five fours and six sixes. Murali Vijay chipped in with 41 from 32 balls. In reply, RCB were rolled over for 123. Manish Pandey made 52 from 44 balls, but the rest could not contribute much. Doug Bollinger claimed 3 for 27. Warriors faced South Australia in the second semi-final at Centurion. Batting first, Warriors made 175 for 6. Davy Jacobs made 61 from 41 balls while Colin Ingram chipped in with 46 from 35 balls. Callum Ferguson blasted a superb 71 from 49 balls with eight fours and two sixes. But, South Australia were still restricted to 145 for 7.

The final

Warriors took on Chennai in the final at Johannesburg. Warriors batted first, but were restricted to 128 for 7. Jacobs again top-scored with 34 while Craig Thyssen made a quick 25 towards the end, but the rest struggled. Muralitharan claimed 3 for 16 for Chennai and Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with 2 for 16. Chennai romped home to the title win as opener Mike Hussey and Murali Vijay registered fifties.
