Trott, though, is unfortunately stranded at 98* (116 balls). 27 runs came off the final two overs, with Umesh Yadav (0-71) and Vinay (1-64 from 9 overs) finishing as India's most expensive bowlers. Well, it's not 300, but England will be might pleased with their total of 298-4.
Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott combined in an unbeaten 83-run stand for the third wicket, as England took advantage of Alastair Cook's correct call at the toss to build themselves a promising platform in the third ODI at Mohali. At the halfway mark of the innings, they had reached 135 for 2, with Trott unbeaten on 42 from 54 balls, and Pietersen alongside him on 51 from 48.
India have lived up to their billing as World Champions in home conditions, being dominant in winning the first two ODIs. However, with the humiliation of a whitewash on the recent England tour still fresh in their memory, India will be looking to clinch the series as soon as possible.
With youngsters like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin putting in some impressive performances, and the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli in form, India have selected an unchanged side for this match at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.
England, meanwhile, are searching for their first ODI win in India since April 2006. The turnaround must start today, and having struggled against spin in the series so far, both the English bowlers and batsmen will be pleased to see some grass on the track at Mohali.
Skipper Alastair Cook has kept faith in the same players, so England too have made no changes for this match.
