Kevin Pietersen’s superb double century took England’s overall lead past the 300 mark. At tea on the third day of the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval, England were placed at 551/4.

England lost Paul Collingwood in the third over of the session. Collingwood scored 42 runs and more importantly put 101 runs for the fourth wicket with Pietersen. He hit five fours before falling leg before to Shane Watson.

Pietersen and Ian Bell then continued to torment England with a 99 runs partnership for the unbroken fifth wicket. Ian Bell was batting on 41 runs with six fours. Pietersen’s double hundred was the highlight of the session. His 213 not out is also his highest in Tests against Australia and his 31 fours in the innings thus far, is also his best effort in Tests.

Australia are still in search of that elusive one-spell from any of the bowlers that could bring them back into the match, but it is clear that the England batsmen have taken the match beyond Australia’s reach. With only seven sessions left, England could declare anytime in the last session today to give their bowlers enough time to bowl at the Aussies.
