Australia crushed Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 107 runs in the opening ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The victory was set up by Man of the Match Phil Hughes’ century on ODI Debut and executed by seamer Clint McKay.

Batting first after winning the toss, Australia piled up 305 for 5 on the board. Opener Hughes top scored with 112 from 129 balls striking 14 fours. Skipper George Bailey scored a sparkling 89 from just 79 balls (with 8 fours and a six) while David Hussey made the difference bulldozing the Sri Lankans for an unbeaten 34-ball 60 (with 6 fours and a six).

The Lankans in their run chase lost two early wickets before Tillakaratne Dilshan (51 from 70 balls with 4 fours) and Wicket Keeper batsman Dinesh Chandimal (73 from 95 balls with 7 fours and a six) revived the hopes but Australia got the better of the duo. A total middle order collapse saw the Lankans bowled out for 198 in 40 overs with three run outs and Clint McKay taking 4 for 33.
