South Africa Vs India(SA vs IND) 2011 ODI Series: India's prolific opener Gautam Gambhir has been ruled out of the five-match ODI series against South Africa after suffering an elbow injury in his 93-run knock in the first innings of the third Test at Newlands.

Cape Town: India's prolific opener Gautam Gambhir has been ruled out of the five-match ODI series against South Africa after suffering an elbow injury in his 93-run knock in the first innings of the third Test at Newlands.

This could jeopardise India's chances in their last ODI series before the World Cup, with both Virender Sehwag and Gambhir not available now. A shoulder niggle has already made Sehwag unavailable and Gambhir's absence is going to hurt India seriously at the top of the order.

The left-handed Delhi batsmen, though, will bat in India's second innings on the fifth day of the Test.

A Lonwabo Tsostsobe delivery hit Gambhir on the left elbow in the first innings, leading to the injury. The opener did not field on Wednesday as he had his arm splinted.

Murali Vijay, who was added as the 17th member of the ODI squad, will probably open for India in the ODIs now.

With the World Cup in February, the team management has decided to give Sehwag and Gambhir enough time to recover fully from their respective injuries.
