Ravichandran Ashwin, who claimed six wickets on his debut Test to help India bundle out West Indies for 180, has join an elite list of Indian bowlers to have taken five-for on debut in Tests.

Ashwin, who took 3-81 in the Windie’s first innings, finished with an impressive 6 for 47 runs in 21.3 overs in the visitors second innings. Another debutant, pacer UmeshYadav also finished with a creditable 2 for 36 in 7 overs.

In total seven bowlers have bagged five or more wickets on debut for India. The first bowler to achieve the feat was fast bowler Mohammad Nissar in India’s first Test match at Lord’s in 1932. The last one to was AmitMishra against Australia at Mohali three years ago.

Ashwin’s nine wickets in the match is the second best after NarendraHirwani, who took 16 on his debut. In fact Hirwani got eight wickets in each of the innings on his debut match.
